This vision drove me to explore the potential of AI tutors in education, seeking a way to better personalize my teaching and lessons.

In one of my Korean EFL university classes, I noticed my students struggling with their speaking assignments. 

They spent too much time writing and too little time practicing speaking. 

To address this, I introduced them to ChatGPT as a writing assistant. By making their writing assignments personal, I encouraged them to use ChatGPT as a tool rather than a crutch. 

The improvement was remarkable, as students could focus more on practicing speaking, enhancing their overall learning experience.

In education, AI can act as a virtual assistant for both teachers and students, offering personalized support and resources.

Historical Context and Trends

For the past few years, I have been experimenting with the flipped classroom model in my English Communication classes.

I would create short videos or direct students to existing videos about the vocabulary or grammar topics we were covering.

Students would watch these videos at home and complete related exercises on Google Forms. 

This setup aimed to prepare them for more interactive and application-based activities in the classroom.

However, I found that many students struggled to apply what they had learned when they returned to class. 

This challenge led me to explore the potential of AI tools like ChatGPT.

I discovered that students felt more comfortable asking questions about grammar or vocabulary in an AI-supported environment, often because they were too shy to ask in class. 

This additional support helped bridge the gap between learning at home and applying knowledge in class discussions.

In my classes, AI tutors offer instant feedback on student work, which is invaluable for timely learning corrections and adjustments. 

These AI systems can be tailored to fit each student’s English proficiency level.

For example, lower-level students can ask questions in Korean and receive simple responses in English, facilitating gradual language acquisition. 

Conversely, higher-level students are challenged with more demanding questions and are encouraged to respond exclusively in English, pushing their language skills further.

AI tutors have notably enhanced student engagement in my classroom. 

Students are now more confident in their discussions and less hesitant to ask questions, whether to their peers or to me, their professor. 

This shift in classroom dynamics is partly due to the confidence they gain from practicing with AI tutors at home. 

The AI tutors provide a safe space for students to practice and refine their skills, leading to more active participation and engagement during class.

For example, in one class exercise, I noticed that students who previously struggled with public speaking were now more willing to participate. 

They spent more time focusing on the delivery of their assignments, a significant improvement from past behavior where the content was the primary focus, and delivery was often neglected.

Integrating AI tools has also improved my teaching efficiency. 

The instant feedback from AI tutors means that I can spend less time on repetitive explanations and more time on meaningful interactions with students.

Integrating AI tutors into a flipped classroom model requires careful planning and the right tools. Here’s a step-by-step guide based on my experiences.

Step 1: Flipping the Classroom

The journey began with flipping the classroom learning model.

Instead of spending class time teaching vocabulary and grammar, I created short, engaging videos that students could watch at home.

These videos covered the essential concepts, and students would then complete quizzes on the material to ensure they understood the basics.

In class, I organized small group discussions where students could demonstrate their learning through interactive activities.

Step 2: Selecting the Right AI Tools

Choosing the appropriate AI tools was challenging due to cost and functionality limitations.

For instance, I experimented with Mizou, an AI platform that allows the creation of custom AI bots.

However, as a teacher, I was restricted to 250 sessions per day, which equates to only about 10 prompts per student in a class of 20. This limitation was not conducive to my needs.

After exploring various options, I found that custom GPTs were my favorite due to their flexibility and customization capabilities.

However, the requirement for each student to have a ChatGPT Plus account, coupled with the restriction of 80 prompts per 3 hours, posed significant constraints.

The most practical solution turned out to be using ChatGPT 3.5 with custom prompts.

ChatGPT 3.5 offers unlimited usage, and it is relatively easy for students to copy and paste custom prompts before starting a tutoring session.

This approach ensures that all students have access to the AI tutor without worrying about prompt limits or additional costs.

Step 3: Creating Effective AI-Supported Learning Materials

Developing effective AI-supported learning materials involves a few key steps:

  1. Identify Learning Objectives: Clearly define what you want your students to achieve with each lesson. This helps in creating focused and relevant content.
  2. Create Engaging Video Content: Produce short, engaging videos that explain the key concepts. Ensure these videos are clear and concise to keep students’ attention.
  3. Design Interactive Quizzes: Develop quizzes that test the students’ understanding of the video content. These quizzes should provide instant feedback, reinforcing learning.
  4. Custom AI Prompts: Craft specific prompts for ChatGPT 3.5 that align with your learning objectives. For instance, you can create prompts that help lower-level students translate questions from Korean to English, while higher-level students receive more challenging tasks.
  5. Facilitate AI Tutoring Sessions: Guide students on how to use the AI tutors effectively. Provide them with instructions on copying and pasting custom prompts and encourage them to use the AI tutor for practice outside of class.

Over the past year, I have utilized AI tools such as ChatGPT, Google Gemini, and Microsoft Copilot for lesson planning.

One of the biggest challenges I faced when integrating AI tutors into my classroom was ensuring all students had access to these tools. 

AI tutors can be expensive, and I had to find a cost-effective solution that didn’t burden my students financially. 

To overcome this, I utilized the free version of ChatGPT 3.5.

I provided students with custom instructions to insert before each homework session, allowing them to benefit from AI tutoring without any additional costs. 

Although using Custom GPTs would be ideal, it is contingent on whether our university decides to provide all students with access to ChatGPT Plus in the future.

Ethical Considerations

In my experience, ethical concerns have been minimal because students are not using AI to complete their assignments but rather as an assistant for their homework. 

This approach ensures that the learning process remains authentic and that students develop their skills with the support of AI, rather than relying on it to do their work for them.

Advice for Educators

For educators considering the implementation of AI tutors in their classrooms, my primary advice is not to be overwhelmed by the plethora of options available. 

Stick with the AI software you know and make it work for your needs. 

Expensive AI tools are not necessarily the best fit for every classroom. In many cases, free versions of tools like ChatGPT, Google Gemini, and Microsoft Copilot are sufficient and can be highly effective. 

Focus on how these tools can enhance your teaching and provide personalized learning experiences for your students.

One of the most anticipated advancements in AI education tools is ChatGPT Voice, which, although delayed until the fall of 2024, holds significant promise for enhancing student engagement through conversational AI tutors. 

The ability for students to have engaging, voice-based interactions with AI will revolutionize how they practice language skills and engage in discussions. 

I plan to integrate AI discussion partners into my classes next semester to leverage this technology.

Additionally, I am keenly interested in the potential of Apple Intelligence and how its tools can benefit both students and teachers in the classroom. 

The integration of advanced AI features from leading tech companies like Apple could further enhance personalized learning experiences and streamline educational processes.

In the coming years, I envision a broader acceptance and integration of AI in schools and universities.
